Advanced conversion options

Advanced conversion options in Conversion settings are the settings of mangaprep, the converter that makes the books. Most of them change the pixels of a page. These pages show how: one real page, converted twice, with only that option different.

Page What it shows
Reading A webtoon-shaped chapter converted as pages and as strips, and the reading direction each book format records
Cropping How much of a page is cut away, in pixels, and what the cut keeps
Color and tone The same page in grayscale and in color, lighter and darker, with the numbers behind the change
Double-page spreads A spread split, kept whole or both, in which order, and what the two-page view writes into an EPUB
Size and borders How a page is fitted to the screen, enlarged, stretched or cropped to fill, and what surrounds it when it is not the screen’s shape
Page images The file each page is saved as: JPEG or PNG, how many grays, and what each costs in bytes
Cover How a book’s cover is made from its first image, which formats have one, and the front of a wide image cut out of it
Book metadata Where each format keeps the title, author and language, what a ComicInfo.xml changes, and when a Kobo book is named .kepub.epub

Each option as the app names it, the flags that set it on the command line, and where it is explained. An option you cannot find in the app, such as --dry-run, belongs to the command line alone.

  • Page size: --upscale (-u) for Fit, enlarging small pages, --stretch (-s) for Stretch to the screen, --wallpaper for Crop to fill the screen.
  • Borders: --whiteborders and --blackborders.
  • The pages come from comics whose authors allow copying: Pepper&Carrot by David Revoy, in color, Go Go! Encyclopedia Girls by Kasuga, in black and white, and a page by Polylerus with a black background. The credits and licences are at the end of this page, and under every picture.
  • The conversion is the mangaprep that Manga2Ink ships, started from Manga2Ink’s starting settings: Kindle Paperwhite 6 (1272 × 1696 pixels), CBZ, manga reading order, double-page spreads kept both ways, small pages enlarged, margins and page numbers cropped. Only the option named in the caption is different between two pictures.
  • The captions give the setting as the app names it, the flag that setting passes to mangaprep when you run it from a terminal (no flag is the default), and the size of each page mangaprep wrote (not converted is a picture of the input). Click a picture to open it larger.
  • The tables of values are not pictures: the title, author, language, reading direction and file name in them were read back from the book mangaprep wrote, converted with the same starting settings unless a row says otherwise.
  • What is not shown. The free black-and-white manga there is has little printed screentone, so what depends on it, such as moiré, is described and not pictured. Pictures show pixels on your screen, not the e-ink screen of a reader.

The pictures on these pages are adaptations of those pages (converted, cropped, resized and, in the diagrams of the Double-page spreads page, placed in frames with numbers and arrows), and keep the licence of the page they come from: the ones made from Go Go! are CC BY-SA 4.0, the ones made from Pepper&Carrot are CC BY 4.0, and the ones made from the Wikipe-tan page are CC BY 2.5. Where an example joins pages, into a strip or into a spread, the page that uses it says so.

How the pictures are made and checked is in the maintainers’ notes.
